Phil Dirt - Reverb Central - PO Box 1609, Felton, CA 95018-1609 USA The Surf Coasters - Extra CD for Tower Records

 | This little three inch CD was a promotional give away via Tower Records in Japan. It contains three live tracks not available elsewhere. While the live sound is somewhat murky with too much room ambiance, it really shows off the band's command of power in a live setting. Exceptional. |
Picks: The Clash, Bikemen!, Fly Up
Track by Track Review
Surf (Instrumental)
Big time crunch and thunder characterize this powerful live performance. The riff is a basic surf line delivered with great fire. As with nearly all Surf Coasters tunes, it shreds the pants off you. It comes to a monstrous end with a big reverb kick.
Surf (Instrumental)
Chunky and aggressive, playful and powerful. Plundering the silence, "Bikemen!" thunders through a basic progression with power and intense drive. Louder, faster, more aggressive than the studio version.
Surf (Instrumental)
"Fly Up" is a pretty raw instro, with quite a bit of edge, and a sorta semi-fuzzy sound. Non-surf instro. I don't think it should have been the opener. In live form, it's a mighty powerful piece. You can feel the floor shake and the walls bleed.
