Phil Dirt - Reverb Central - PO Box 1609, Felton, CA 95018-1609 USA The Astroglides - Dark Surf 6.8.2002

 | The Astroglides came to KFJC on June 8th, 2002. Well, to be precise, guitarist Ran Mosessco came with his wife Dale, who played bass, and Jeremy Rexford (Pollo Del Mar) played drums. This special performance happened because Ran and his wife Dale were on vacation in the US, and we were able borrow equipment and the services of drummer extraordinaire Jeremy Rexford.
Special thanks go out to Uncle Al, who helped with tech support and loaned his amp and outboard reverb, John Hamilton (Berzerkers) who loaned his bass amp, Dino Francesconi (Berzerkers), who brought his outboard reverb just in case, and Cable Monkey Boy a.k.a. Gallium Arsenyde and Mike Luft who humped equipment, set up mics, and generally took abuse, and of course Ran, Dale and Jeremy. |

Track by Track Review
Surf (Instrumental)
Ultra heavy surf grind, with a solid double picked lead, reverbed and strong over an intense feedback howl, from what sounds like a wailing Theremin. Strong drums and bass, and an overall evil texture. This would be a great track if well recorded in a studio.
Surf (Instrumental)
Non melodic, dark assaultive and powered with mean doubled picked guitar over insane wailing Theremin. It invokes images of insane asylum surf rides around Aldebaran, with the white coats in hot pursuit. Very hostile.
Surf (Instrumental)
The Gypsy influences are crystal clear in this tribal thumper. Like gypsies dancing for the last time, "Gypsy Wagon" pumps and circulates with a dissonant edge. Very cool!
Surf (Instrumental)
The Astroglides' version of "Hava Nagila" even sports the verse most bands leave out. Less than 40 seconds long, yet scrumptiously dark. Very cool!
Surf (Instrumental)
Minimalist dark surf, punkoidal brevity and gloom, off color edge and grumble. The break is liquid smooth in contrast to the main body of "Baccyam Stomp."
Surf (Instrumental)
More or less Bedouin in melody, "Arab Bush" bumps and grooves in a dangerous way, with choked and dribbled guitar. Most unusual.
Surf (Instrumental)
Raging drums and flying double picked low-E guitar deliver an image of disaster... a melodic all be it evil riff and just plain impaling speed... man-oh-man.
Surf (Instrumental)
Talk about dark! As you can well imagine from the title, "Kabbalah Fucker" is not your typical optimistic surf melody. Rhythmic and thunderous, it's just plain dangerous!
Surf (Instrumental)
Opening with gloom borrowed from "Dark Surf," and adrift with dramatic power, this eventually evolves into a double pick ultra dark surf number with the danger of Mavericks on a really bad day.
Sci-Fi Surfcore (Instrumental)
An immense pummeling of the Original Surfaris' best known tune, taken to the edge of the darkness of space, where only the inverted insane can understand, and where outlanders truly rule. Immense!
