|One of the more flamboyant and influential bands in rock 'n' roll is the Who. Their early material was nothing short of brilliant and vital. This deluxe edition of their first album is remixed to stereo for the first time, and includes 2 instrumentals. neither is surf, but then Keith Moon was in the Beachcombers only a year earlier.|
Picks: The Ox, My Generation
Track by Track Review
One of just a handful of instrumentals the Who recorded, "The Ox" is a powerful demonstration of the manic surf influenced drumming of Keith Moon, who cut his teeth in British instro band the Beachcombers. This is mostly an R&B jam, devoid of melody, yet completely overpowering with the feedback and throb, that rolling piano, and mostly those raging drums. By the way, this is the first appearance mixed to stereo.
This is a stereo mix of the backtrack to "My Generation." If only Pete would have overdubbed a new lead (the original is also not here), it would have been way cool. As is, it's just a splendid anomaly.
