Phil Dirt - Reverb Central - PO Box 1609, Felton, CA 95018-1609 USA | There are some very nice tracks here, as well as some forgettable material. The drummer had his chops together, but the lead guitarist needed more time with meter when he double picked. |
Picks: Alpens Ros, Kors Pa Idas Grav, When Johnny Comes Marching Home, Skyline, Hasselbysteppen, Wiggle Beat, Python
Track by Track Review
Rock (Instrumental)
A polka beat behind a traditional melody, only set apart by great drums. Kinda cool, and it grows on you.
Rock (Instrumental)
"El Cumbanchero" is such a cool song to play with. The Violents do it with great percussion and guitar inspired by Les Paul, but a lot less fluid. Quite twangy.
Rock (Instrumental)
"Kors Pa Idas Grav" is fastish number with great rockin' drums and Hank Marvin-esq guitar. The melody flows nicely as the drummer goes nuts. Big slap back on the snare.
When Johnny Comes Marching Home

Rock (Instrumental)
"When Johnny Comes Marching Home" has been done many times in rock instro form. The Violents version borders on surf, with a wetter than Duane Eddy twang. The tremolo shimmer adds richness to this fine version.
Vildkatten
Rock (Instrumental)
This is an easy listening track with a warm melody and round tone. It's pretty repetitious.
Rock (Instrumental)
"Skyline" has faster tempo than melody, giving is a rock edge while its melody is smooth and charming. The muted bridge is really cool, and the drummer hollers with excitement. Nice track.
Rock (Instrumental)
Big twangin' Euro guitar fun ensues as The Violents play "Hasselbysteppen" with very light hearts. Bordering on country at times, the song is all fun and twang. The muted break is delightful.
A Closer Walk
Rock (Instrumental)
"A Closer Walk" is lightly double picked with poor meter and stilted playing. You shouldn't double pick on record until you have pretty good meter.
Guitar Bolero
Rock (Instrumental)
"Guitar Bolero" is a really light number with low impact playing all around. Pretty dismissible.
Rock (Instrumental)
Bouncy drums and bass run beneath long echo stretched guitar notes. The melody is pleasant enough, but "Mamba" just doesn't seem to have enough spirit, though the tremolo guitar is really cool.
Rock (Instrumental)
On the beefier side for The Violents, "Wiggle Beat" has an almost spaghetti melody, and is played on lower registers for this band. I think this would easily be converted to surf.
Kvantingen (Kvasarevalsen)

Rock (Instrumental)
Bouncy in a fifties kinda way, "Kvantingen" has lots of spunk and pumping bass. All fun for sure.
Rock (Instrumental)
Drama and adventure with echo sustained guitar and a light semi military cadence. "Python" grows on you, like a spaghetti western, which it almost is.
