Phil Dirt - Reverb Central - PO Box 1609, Felton, CA 95018-1609 USA Greenwich Alley - Surfin' Roll

 | Pumping surf chunk the way only Japanese bands seem to make it. Obviously inspired by the Surf Coasters and a punk version of Los Straitjackets, this band has got fun and energy down cold. |
Picks: M.G., Cheese and Corn, Mr. Nata, Rockin' Beach, SHANG-HAI WAVE, Mosquite, Jive A Go! Go!, Tumbling Dice, BATMAN Theme
Track by Track Review
Surf (Instrumental)
Riff rockin', pumping surf intensity, with flying guitar lines and extra loudness. More rock in structure, but very surf in attack and sound.
Surf (Instrumental)
Drama and string magic, tribal tom toms, and pulsing bass. "Cheese and Corn" features a rock melody line that's surfed up some. Greenwich Alley chant "cheese and corn" at appropriate intervals.
Surf (Instrumental)
This is a very nice track, with a flowing melody line and decidedly surf flavor. Some Duane Eddy influences are here too. "Mr. Nata" is well written and very good listening, with ample changes and great tom toms.
Surf (Instrumental)
This is a catchy song with a rolling groove and inviting riff. Structured somewhat like country players write when they do surf, but with more of a coastal feeling. Hand claps add to the coolness of "Rockin' Beach."
Surf (Instrumental)
Stylistically like the more riffy Surf Coasters songs, "SHANG-HAI WAVE" has solid energy and rich sound. I don't know why the title is in caps, but who cares! It's a great track!
Surf (Instrumental)
Tom toms pound, the guitar drives with evil fuzz, and the bass follows the lead as "Mosquite" angrily powers up. Dark and aggressive, with solid energy and edge. The surf guitar added in the break brings this surf punk epic to the curl.
Surf (Instrumental)
A fifties "Rock Around The Clock" kind of jivin' rhythm and melody makes "Jive A Go! Go!" a fun track. Not serious, just a mighty joyous romp steeped in a bygone era.
Surf (Instrumental)
Heavy chop chords sync with percussion and bass, surf chords ring out, and then the main riff comes in with an Eddie Angel feeling. Way fun. No, it's not the Rolling Stones song.
Surf (Instrumental)
Neil Hefty's TV theme is sped up and garaged out. Very fast and punky, with surf and twang in abundant supply.
