Phil Dirt - Reverb Central - PO Box 1609, Felton, CA 95018-1609 USA Dick Dale - Peel Session 10.09.02 | These four tracks were recorded for John Peel in 2002. All four pretty much rip, but then it is Dick Dale, isn't it! |
Picks: Colorado Avalanche Theme, Jesse Pearl, Death Of A Gremmie 02, Surf Trip
Track by Track Review
Surf (Instrumental)
Hard charging big guitar lays out Dick Dale riffology. "Colorado Avalanche Theme" is a retitled version of "Scalped." It's loud and aggressive, full of flash and dark tone. I think this is much more interesting than the album version.
Surf (Vocal)
This old Dick Dale vocal is completely revved up, with big surf guitar and Dick's vocal more subdued. A major improvement.
Surf (Instrumental)
A very beefy update of Dick Dale and his Del-tones' "Death Of A Gremmie" from the first album back in '62. Loud and aggressive, holding nothing back. The song used to have a soulful groove and great piano. Here, it's just all power.
Surf (Instrumental)
Drums launch "Surf Trip," which is a medley of "Surf Beat" and "Let's Go Trippin'" reinvented. Slower and much beefier, and very powerful, with some very slithery lines in the "Let's Go Trippin"' section. Very cool.
