Track by Track Review
A mysterious middle eastern opening is bumped by a "Nitro"-like progression with lots of spiffy fast finger work. A bit punky, maybe even thrashy, yet as if folkrock was taken to the surf. Reminiscent of The Torpedoes in their heyday. Very cool.
With cool Spanish chords and a galloping beat, "Comanchero" travels across your senses with and engaging and satisfying melody accompanied by dramatic bull fight trumpet. Whammy chords and drama are the watchwords here. I must confess to liking this a lot, especially the superbly pure drums.
Spaghetti Surf (Instrumental)
"Dos Diablos" has an exotic, semitropical melody and beat, but is squarely colored by the spaghetti western ethic. Great drums and plenty of energy, along with the western trumpet, make this a spectacular instro. The lead guitar is often playing in surf mode, double picking and riding high. Exceptionally strong.
Theme From The Inscrutables
Surf Rock (Instrumental)
"Theme From The Inscrutables" is a really fun track with a fine melody riff. Spies, exotic mystery, and plenty going on. The horn provides interesting accents, as does the theremin. Very cool!
"Neptune Stomp" is sports a very Eddie Angel-ish melody and structure. The break is like a whole other song. The drums are very cool, and the long shallow whammy chords rule. Rippin' glissandos and more round out this fine track.
The Squidly daddies deliver one fiery performance of their original number that is also available in studio form elsewhere. Hot playing, but cruddy ambient recording.
Menacing low rumble and tremolo accompaniment grumble as the dorsal finned visitors threaten the afternoon. "Shark Attack!!!" is more about danger and the dark side than melody, and it sure works to convey the fear. Very cool!
Jet Set Surf Jazz (Instrumental)
The misty ambiance and jazzy flow of the jet set sounds of bygone eras is emulated very well, coupled with some wild semi psychedelic guitaristry. This is a very cool track.
Space Age Surf (Instrumental)
Psycho-strange effects, disturbing chords and moody production, and a sense of danger that attracts. Dribbly double pick lines, hanging surf notes, and jazzy chords give the night a scary edge. I like this a lot. It's a long way from the traditional surf envelope, but it's just so cool!
Near Surf (Instrumental)
"HarLee Guitar" is a fun and bouncy song with a bit of biker edge and updated southwest twang. The relentless string of notes flow like water from the hands of George Tomsco. Powerful and very cool.
