Alwaro Negro - Alwaro Negro Is Dead (demo)dotdotdotdot
artworkThis 2004 demo from Italy's Alwaro Negro was culled from their website. In many ways, I like this better than their CD. The production is much cleaner, and the music is very fresh and immediate. It's not classic surf, but rather borrows from the genre, along with rock and punk and jazz to paint a portrait of various regions of a dark and distant land.

Track by Track Review

Crasto dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

"Crasto" is an interestingly dark number with a bleak future looming on its canvas. There's no room for optimism here, unless you're an android looking to run things. Textured and very thick.

Grumps dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

With the title in mind, imagine mechanized surf that retains an organic sense. The lethal optimism of surf is displaced by a resigned future. While it won't get you grinning, it surely hooks in to the worrier in you.

Sigariforme dotdotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Semi hypnotic bass, drums with a human face, a second guitar note pattern with a sense of the beach, and a melody that's nearly optimistic, as if it's not quite ready to dare to smile, but is just sure the impending doom was merely a failed prediction. Quite a cool track!

Spaccadito dotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Warble tweakery and a not quite bleak future peak out from under the multi-textured layers of the arrangement. Dissonant, slightly mechanical, and moody.

Speed Hawaii dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

With a light melody that nods to vacations in an a wash on heavy bass that doubts the fun. It's an interesting contrast. As the song evolves, guitar tones transform from light hearted to distorted chop chord danger.

Surf Rouge dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

The guitars merge jazz and island chords, along with string bending and double picked surf danger into a sci-fi image of the attack of the killer anchovies and the waves that brought them. Very unusual and very engaging.

Tacciack dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

This light hearted number is like a Brazilian travelog gone danger surf in an insane world where the surface of the sea is scared by moving and breaking troughs instead of swells. A very unusual sound and effect.

Trafficando Inseguimenti dotdotdotdot
Surf (Instrumental)

Heavy, dangerous, and multi-textured, with big drama and sophisticated developing imagery. Many sounds and ideas merge, from surf and rock to punk and jazz. The weight is from the dissonant tonality.
